So today was World Autism Awareness Day. Did you know that my 5 year old daughter has been diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum? Her diagnosis is Pervasive Development Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified. It's totally confusing because basically what that diagnosis means is that she has some symptoms of Autism (most importantly social communication deficits) but doesn't really fall into any of the other categories. On the other hand, it's been so good for us to get the diagnosis because not only is there now an explanation for most of her behaviors, but now I can help and support for her instead of just snide comments and strange looks.
Today we wore blue to help raise awareness of Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders. Magoo kept asking me, "When can we go to the Autism thing were we get to wear blue?" I tried to explain that it wasn't someplace to go it was just something we do. At any rate, she enjoyed dressing herself in all blue for the day. She sure is cute.
The day started out so rough with a raiding of the freezer for blueberries. The kids stained their jammies and several rooms of the house blue for Autism awareness today. *sigh* There were meltdowns on the way to the car, there were meltdowns in the car, but after I picked Magoo up from school today she was golden. She followed directions, was kind to her sister, and was downright charming. After the girls played "Easter egg hunt" all afternoon we spent the evening outside. Dinner was served on the deck and we played until it was bath time. Tonight was a breeze. The moral of the story is "don't judge a book by it's cover." Magoo is more than her tantrums. She's smart, active, creative, and has the capacity for such great joy. Today looked like it was going to be terrible and ended up wonderful. This Mom Loves the surprise ending.
